Class 61

Cheong Hiong,

This is a very well done blog, I like the writeup and the layout, I hope all of us all over the world will get involved in this blog.

Thanks to Chow Sien who must have tried his best to present this blog to us.

The pictures in the blog are timeless, especially the group picture of our Standard Six class. Suddeny so many faces-including those old teachers- who had disappeared from my memory all these years are coming back.

How I wish I could tell where they are and how they are doing now? I am sure they wish the same.

It is really like a dream.

Can you recognise Meng Long? I doubt. Lily is there too. And the techers, I can still hear them teaching in our classes, where are they now?

We were still boys about to reach teenage.I have not crossed path with all of them since we parted half a century ago.

There are so many regrets.

And now we are old folks.

let us meet, shake hands and hug each other at Al Famosa, before it is too late.

Thank you for setting up this blog. The story is well presented and I enjoy reading it. Although I was in CHHS for only 3 years, reading these stories bring back many sweet memories. hh

Let me try to remember our old teachers in this class picture of Standard Six at Chung Hwa School, Jalan Sayang, Muar:

On the extreme right is Fang Ze Sen, a very stern teacher who was our form master , he taught us maths in Standard 5. He was so strict even if you got 95 marks for your test he would still cane you. He caned me once and I can still feel the heat of it.

It was raining one day and when he came to the class he called a few boys to come out, as they stood in a row he asked them to show their hands and caned them! He said he saw them playing in water pools on his way to the school!

Fourth on the right is Liew Zen Pian, he taught us Natural Science, another stern teacher.

Fifth on the right is Chen Ren Chang, he never taught me.

Seventh on the right is Wang Yin Siang, he taught me Chinese and singing. He could sing well and he played the piano.

Eigth on the right is Liew Jien Ku, an art teacher and brother of the famous artist in Singapore the late Liew Kang.

Our school headmaster is Chen Ren How, seated in the middle, nineth from right. He went on to be headmaster of our high school beforfe he left for Singapore where he became headmaster of Sun Teik Secondary School and a famous artist.

Today you can still see his calligraphy on some of the sighboards in the shops in Muar.

To his right is Wang Chang Yik, a Hainanese and a graduate from Nanjing University, I never saw him smile, later I think he took over from Chen Ren How.

I have forgotten the names of the three ladies seated on the left. But I remember her (extreme left), she was a widow living with a son and daughter, a good teacher but very temperamental.

One day all of a sudden she asked Lily to come out and caned her with a long and big cane. But Lily did not cry. I can still hear the smacking on Lily's palm today.

Next to her was a teacher for Englsih classes but she never taught me.I always taught she was beautiful.

Next to her is Madam Wong, wife of another teacher Lee Chang Chien. She taught us maths and very good.

Fourth on the left is Wang Yik Zong, he taught us Chinese, very good, I learned a lot from him. It was under him I began to like Chinese composition, he gave comments o our writings, those days some of the girls in the class such as Chai Yin Zen and Chiew Yin Sia always borrowed my compositions to read.

The fifth on the left is Liew Jien Yong, our art teacher, another brother of Liew Kang. I was a bad art student so I did not learn much from his classes.

Sixth on the left is the famous Wang He, another very stern teacher, always carried his spectacles on his forehead.

So you na see those days the teachers liked to cane us, but on the whole they were very good and serious about their job.

Today I think many of them are no longer around, I miss them.

I think it is worthwhile to post our social activities. Compare with emails, blogspot would go beyond the usual group of classmates. I am sure our classmates would want to know what is going on among us.

Let me walk down the memory lane with my old classmates of Standard 6 Class 1 in the picture taken in 1955, more than 53 years ago.

In the row of the girls I can only recognise a few: third from left is Chiew Yik He, sister of Chiew Boon Keong. She was good at maths .

Sixth from left is Wang Jn Ruan, who is the sister of our school badminton player Wang Jin Chu. She lived in the medicine shop which occupied the corner lot of the block where Ban Hing Bookstore and Bata Shoe were, the name of her shop was Sin Chee Teik.

She was sweet but very quiet, I don't remember she ever talked to any boy.

Lily is on her left. I never talked to her. Those days the girls stayed among themselves all the time, they seldom mixed with the boys.

On the left of Lily is Zen Shieh Yeh, she was much older than us . She was already a beautiful girl, a bit bashful but very sweet. She becamse teacher and married a school headmaster and now they live in Klang.

On her left is Chiew Yin Shia, a dark girl very good at studies. One day she came to me and asked me to lend her my composition book, I was very flattered.

The last girl is Lee Yik Ying, a small skinny girl. I was told she got married and divorced.

There was another girl Chai Yin Zen, sister of Chai Lee Ren, she was a dark and sweet girl. I was attracted by her but dared not make any move. She is not in the picture, I really wonder.

I have not seen her since CHHS days. I heard she stayed back in Muar and remained single. What a pity.

Let us go to the boys in the row just behind the girls: can you recognise the first four from the left? Peter Khoo, Meng Leng ,Chow Sien and Chai Lee Ren.

I am sure the first three names sound very familiar to you. The chubby faces are still there, right? So innocent and boyish, I doubt Peter had developed any interest in the girls, he was the smallest among the boys, but the smartest.

Who would expect all of them to grow up to shine in their studies and careeers later?

1955 was a memorable year: this was the year when MCP leader Chin Peng and his comrades Chin Tien aand Rashid Maidin left the jungles in Baling, Perak to have peace talks with the late Tengku, Tan Cheng Lock and David Marshall.

The newspapers were full of the coverage of the talks but we were still too small.

Chow Sien interviewed Chen Tien before he died and published a book, the book is on sale in MPH.

Chow Sien was detained when he got entangled in the leftist activities in KL and sent to Taiping where he remained for six years under ISA.

He studied hard and passed his Upper Six Cambridge examination.

Nobody knows what happened. Lily fell in love with him and visited him in Taping almost every week.

This is some romance CH must write one day.

Now they have a son who is an engineer but still pursuing his MA studies and a daughter who is a lawyer working in Taman Tun Dr.Ismail.

Peter has now settled down comfortably in Perth as an Australian citizen with his dear wife Saofong who is from Singapore and ML has also retired as Director General of The Environment Department.

ML married a friend of his sister, Kate Teo who is also from CHHS. Now she joins us for our Tuesday gathering. After taking her retirement from her law practice she devotes a lot of her time to cooking, so ML is the lukcy guy who gets to taste her new dishes before everybody else. They live in Taman Tun Dr.Ismail and sometimes we meet during our morning walk in the park nearby.

As for Lee Ren, he went to study in Australia after CHHS and we never met.Someone told me he has passed away, bless his soul. Some thought he was proud but we were good friends.

Sixth to the left is our class monitor Wang Swee Hwa. A very nice boy but we have never met.

Can you recognise the boy on his left? That is me the Hailum boy. So you all know me already.

I was staying with my late dad in a rented room opposite the Clock Tower in Jalan Maharani. He was a kepala for a rubber holding owned by a Singaporean.

My father decided to stay in Muar leaving my mom and sisters at Pagoh after he was threatened with arrest and deportation to China by a detective.

Those were the days when these detectives were so powerful they could slam you with any accusations invovlving the communists and took you away from your family.

Some of my neighbours were detained and sent to Chiina, leaving their wives and young kids to struggle for survival. Some never met again.

I remember this detective came to our room one day, he left after my father took out some money and gave it to him. My father told me he couldnot leave us behind.

Two seats away from me is Zang Wee Tak of the Wee Shin Bookstore near the Rex Theatre. Two of his elder brothers were our school basketball players. Our school was famous for our strong basketball team those days.

An elder sister joined the communists in the jungles.

After the peace treaty was signed in Bangkok, she came back to work for Hai-O in KL and later Kajang as a Chinese medicine doctor. She was among a few others from CHHS who disappeared into the jungels during the Emergency rule.

Wee TAk was my good freind, I used to go to his bookstore to read the many magazines for free.

Wee Tak's mom always dressed in nyonya attires and his father was already very old and fragile.

I was told Wee Tak now runs a sundry shop in Muar, I should look him up soon.
